Fall 2012 TV: The CW (Casting)

The CW has some really great shows being made into pilots this year. Casting has almost finished, which means that we are one step closer to learning what the network will choose for prime time next Fall!
(UPDATE: Images removed)

The Top Contenders:

Based on the forthcoming series of books by Kiera Cass, The Selection is an epic romance set 300 years in the future which centers on a poor young woman who is chosen by lottery to participate in a competition to become the next queen of a war-torn nation at a crossroads.

The Leads:

       Aimee Teegarden - America Singer
Ethan Peck - Prince Maxon
William Moseley - Aspen Leger

The Other Cast:

Sean Patrick Thomas - Sylvan Santos
Peta Sergeant - Gaia Woods
 Leonor Varela - Queen Amberly
Martin Donovan - King Clarkson

I haven't read the book, but it sounds like a great premise. The casting makes me hope that this pilot gets chosen for prime time. Aimee Teegarden and Ethan Peck are absolutely amazing! Plus they have just cast William Moseley from Narnia as the second male lead! Yeah, that's the trump card. It's my top pick for the CW! Fingers crossed :)

The Carrie Diaries
Based on the novel by Candace Bushnell, a young Carrie Bradshaw comes of age in the 1980s, asking her first questions about love, sex, friendship and family while exploring the worlds of high school and Manhattan.

The Leads:

  AnnaSophia Robb - Carrie Bradshaw
Austin Butler - Sebastian Kidd

The Other Cast:

  Brendan Dooling - Walt Reynolds
Katie Findlay - Maggie Landers
Ellen Wong - Jill "The Mouse" Thompson
Stefania Owen - Dorrit Bradshaw
Freema Agyeman - Larissa
Matthew Letscher - Carrie's father

So I want to like the casting choices. I love AnnaSophia Robb, but I can't help but be hesitant about the male lead. Austin Butler has been in numerous roles for teen television (Switched at Birth and Life Unexpected) and I haven't really seen anything that has impressed me yet. But I have hopes for this show. I haven't read the book or seen Sex and the City, but I feel like it could do well. The downfall is that this could play out like another 90210 or Gossip Girl, which are shows that are just getting old. It isn't one of my favorite pilots in the make for the CW but it definitely is a contender for prime time.

Beauty and the Beast
Loosely based on CBS’ Beauty and the Beast series from the 1980s, this is a modern-day romantic love story with a procedural twist.

The Leads:

 Kristen Kreuk - Catherine Chandler
Jay Ryan - Vincent Koslow

The Other Cast:

  Austin Basis - J.T. Forbes
Nicole Gale Anderson - Heather Chandler
Nina Lisandrello - Tess O'Malley

I'm hesitant about this show. For starters, the whole fairy tale reimagined has been done before. This version has the Kristen Kreuk being a NYPD homicide detective whose mother was killed by the Beast (Jay Ryan). I'm not a big fan of cop dramas, and I'm not sure how they fit in with the CW. I do like the casting for the Beast and his best friend J.T. Forbes (Austin Basis). But I'm not a huge fan of Kristen Kreuk's. I adored Smallville, but hated her character. And she hasn't impressed me much with her other roles. In conclusion, I'm on the fence with this one.

Arrow
Based on the DC Comics title, published by DC Entertainment, this hourlong drama is a modern retelling of the legendary DC Comics character Green Arrow.

The Leads:
Stephen Amell - Oliver Queen/Green Arrow
Katie Cassidy - Dinah "Laurel" Lance

The Other Cast:
Willa Holland - Thea Queen
Susanna Thompson - Moira Queen
Jamey Sheridan - Robert Queen
Paul Blackthorne - Det. Quentin Lance
David Ramsey - John Diggle

This is one of my favorites in the running. The casting is basically amazing! I love both Katie Cassidy and Willa Holland. The only downfall that this show could take is if it turns out to be another Smallville. I loved Smallvile, but I want something fresh. If Arrow can pull it off then I will be the first person in front of the TV if it gets picked up. Plus, Willa Holland as Stephen Amell's little sister - who wouldn't love this?

The Wild Cards:

Glad to leave her nerdy past behind for a fresh start in the adult professional world, a newly minted doctor discovers that, sadly and comically, life at the hospital where she works is no different than high school.

The Leads:
Justin Hartley - Will Rider
Michael Rady - Micah Ellis

This show has a great concept and I'm interested to see what kind of medical drama it will be. Mamie Gummer is Meryl Streep's daughter, and I loved her in the short lived medical series Off the Map. Justin Hartley is equally amazing, having played Green Arrow on Smallville. I think that Michael Rady is the weak spot in the casting choices. His role in the Melrose Place remake was just okay. I'm hoping that this is wildcard does get picked up because of Gummer and Hartley (and because it's a medical drama). Okay, I'm a bit biased there - being pre-med and all :)

Cult
An inquisitive, young female production assistant on a wildly popular television show joins a journalist blogger in investigating the show's rabid fans. Together, the duo finds the fans might be recreating crime scenes from the show in their real lives -- behavior that has lead to a rash of disappearances and a likely murder.

The Leads:
Jessica Lucas - Skye Yarrow
Matt Davis - Jeff (journalist/blogger)

This show feels like it could be going in the direction of Veronica Mars. What's interesting is that Matt Davis is currently on The Vampire Diaries. If he's been cast in a new pilot it may not mean good things for his character on VD. Jessica Lucas is from the short lived Melrose Place remake. I love Matt Davis, but I'm hesitant about Jessica Lucas. In my opinion, this isn't one of the better potential shows.

Based on the Israeli format Danny Hollywood.  In this romantic-time-travel-musical, a documentary filmmaker travels back in time to the 1990’s where she meets and falls in love with the rock star subject of her film. When she unexpectedly returns to present day, she must find her way back to the past to reunite with her love and prevent his untimely death.

The Leads:
 Craig Horner - Joey Dakota

So, wow, this show has a very interesting concept. The casting choices are great. I love Amber Stevens from Greek and Craig Horner from Legend of the Seeker. But I have a feeling this is going to be hard for the CW to fit in their brand. I'm not sure how a time traveling/pop-star/nineties show will fit with the others. It's definitely on the fence for me.

Drama set at an historic New England summer resort where the new and returning staff attend to the practical, emotional and often comical needs of the guests while navigating friendships, rivalries and romances of their own.

The Lead:

Only one cast member has been booked for the pilot. Elizabeth Henstridge is a newcomer, which I am all for! I love when fresh faces show up on my small screen at home. However, this is also the least buzzed about show. Lack of hype is going to hurt it's chances for prime time selection. The only real kicker this show has are its executive producers: Mark Shwann (One Tree Hill) and J.J. Abrams (Lost).

So you have made it to the end, whew! That was a long list! Here's which shows I hope land on TV for the fall. (In a very specific and biased order)

1. The Selection
2. Arrow
3. First Cut
4. Beauty and the Beast
5. The Carrie Diaries
6. Joey Dakota
7. Cult
8. Shelter

    1. I totally know what you mean! It's really hard having such high expectations for the books you love. I'm already trying not to get my hopes up with The Hunger Games movie!

  4. Great post! Here's my rank:

    1. Arrow
    2. First Cut
    3. The Selection

I'm only choosing three because the others look kinda...meh, and I think the CW will pick at most three new shows. Hopefully these make the cut. Also, Carrie Dairies casting choices are weird (except for AnnaSophia, love her!).
