Books into Movies: Divergent (Filming Begins Later This Year)

Divergent (Divergent, #1)

If you haven't noticed there are lots of young adult books being optioned for movies. Many of them don't see pre-production but there are the lucky few that go on to hire directors and screenwriters. Some of these even take a standstill, as we've noticed with the long awaited Mortal Instruments movie. Luckily, Divergent seems to be moving at a good pace to become a film. Deadline reports that filming will begin within the year, and its predicted release date is 2015.

Lionsgate-Summit’s feature adaptation of the dystopian teen tale, with screenplay by Evan Daugherty, is in pre-production now with plans to start filming later this year. If that proves a hit at theaters, the company also holds rights to the twentysomething author’s sequel Insurgent, which currently sits No. 1 on the Children’s Chapter Books list.

The same production company that brought Hunger Games to screen is also adapting Divergent. Evan Daugherty is signed on to write the screenplay. He is credited with the recently released Snow White and the Huntsman. Having just seen that movie, I thought that the script was the weakest part. Hopefully this isn't any indication of Daughtry's talents. I'm still rooting for a great adaptation of this book!

Filming is set for later this year, which means that casting will soon be under way! Of course this is my favorite part of pre-production. So who would you want to be Tris and Four? Thoughts below!

  1. I completely agree with you the script for Snow White was incredibly weak. I'm excited that this will be a movie but now also very nervous that it will be subpar.

    1. Me too. I was excited and then I saw who was writing the script. I'm crossing my fingers though, hopefully it turns out okay.

  3. I see Ginny Gardner as Tris the most. But I also wouldn't mind seeing Taissa Farmiga portray Tris. And maybe Vera Farmiga -- Taissa's older sister -- portray her mother if she is casted as Tris. Now imagine the acting there? It would be marvelous! The only man/actor I can ever see as Four is Max Irons. I don't know why, but that's just how it is. Max Irons is the PERFECT Four. Now, that's just my opinion. :]
