Books into Movies: The Mortal Instruments (Casting - Isabelle Lightwood)

After so many fake-outs with the production for The Mortal Instruments it seems like progress is finally being made. Isabelle and Alec Lightwood have both been cast, but Isabelle is the only one revealed so far. So who is playing Isabelle Lightwood?

She's a french actress who played in Showtime's The Borgias

Here's what Cassandra Clare says about the casting choice!
Jemima West. She’s beautiful (like whoa) and really talented. You can see her as Vittoria on The Borgias right now. She had a lot of Izzy’s toughness and directness in her audition. I like her.

Our Alec may well be a lot more known to you. He’s British, and …I’ll tell you who he is in the next post.

She also answers some questions from Variety on her blog. Check out the Q&A below.

“Will Jemima dye her hair/wear contacts to play Isabelle?”
She will surely dye her hair. Contacts probably, but some people/actors can’t wear them (Daniel Radcliffe never could, that’s why Harry always had blue-green eyes, allergies I think) so I cannot make promises about stuff that is basically “the costume department’s decision down the road in connection with the actor’s physical limitations.” I am assured they will do everything they can to make the actors fit the physical descriptions in the book, where appropriate.

“What was Jemima’s audition like?”

Really good! She did a scene with Clary, but she also did the scene where she talks about Alec being gay — “I love my brother, I’d do anything for him, but I can’t help him with this” and was lovely and passionate. I was like, That’s damn right, you love your brother! He’s a good guy! She convinced me.

“Can you tell us any of the other
actresses/actors that are auditioning for the other parts?”

I asked and — no, I can’t. It’s actually I believe against union laws. If the actors want to talk about it, they can, but I can’t talk about it for them.

“When will you be able to tell us about Alec?”

Would that I knew. Golf ball, I’m telling you. Still, when I return from Internet purgatory, you can’t say it isn’t DRAMATIC!

Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower are currently cast as the leads. I'm not too thrilled about Jamie, but I do like Lily Collins. I don't know much about Jemima, but from the image she looks basically how I pictured Isabelle.

What do you think? Surprised by the choice?  Have you read the books? Will you be seeing the movie? Thoughts below!

  1. She looks like an okay choice- for a long time I was thinking this movie was never going to be made, but looks like (hopefully) it will!

    1. Yeah, I thought the movie wasn't going to be made either. It feels like it has been in pre-production limbo forever!!

  2. Yay! I'm really pleased with the choice for Isabelle - I can only judge Jemima on her appearance at the moment, but I can definitely imagine her as Isabelle! I hope she does a good job as acting her too, though. And I SO CAN'T WAIT to find out who Alec is!!! He's a British actor... *oooh!*

    1. Personally, I really hope it's gonna be Douglas Booth as Alec - he's like THE perfect Alec in my mind! :)
