Being the only human in a world of merfolk... isn't easy. Florence Waverley chose to stay in Niemela, but things have gone awry. Secrets have risen and the prince she cares about has pulled away. All the while, dark dreams warn her of a tragedy that only she can stop. But in order to save the merman she loves, Florence will have to enter the Life Path tournament: a brutal test of fear and madness.

The tournament is a rite of passage--a maze where young mermaids and mermen battle to find their purpose. It is also a place where Florence will face grave danger: mermaids with evil magic, tunnels filled with sea fire, and guardians who wish to use her as a pawn in their secret plans. But will Florence be strong enough to survive the tournament... or will she perish inside it?

Everything hangs in the balance: her life, her world, and her love.

Interview

Luminaire is the second installment in the Florence Waverly series. Does the sequel pick up right where the first book left off?
Luminaire begins a few weeks after the events of “Florence.” Things have changed for Florence Waverley, and her new life below the waves isn’t going according to plan—but all of this pales in comparison to the challenges that await her.

What drew you to write about mermaids of all paranormal creatures?
I’ve always been obsessed with them. All at once, they’re both relatable and yet completely alien: part human… and part fable.

Who was your favorite character to write?
Florence Waverley. It was a lot of fun trying to envision a mer world through the eyes of a human outsider. As the only landwalker in a world of mer, she’s always looking in from the outside.

Rolan and Florence was my favorite couple in the first book. Do we get to see more of their romance in Luminaire?
Yes! There is a greater emphasis on romance in this book. The two of them, however, will face a great deal of challenges when Florence enters the tournament. In many ways, the secrets surrounding the Darkness are just as powerful as the ones that Rolan keeps to himself.

Luminaire is centered around the Life Path tournament. Could you describe what challenges Florence will face in the tournament?

The Life Path tournament is a place where each mer novice must battle to survive—and find his or her purpose. It’s full of challenges that are both unexpected and deadly. Without giving away too much, some of the highlights include run-ins with evil mermaids and a world of crazy coiffures.

Yolee, the lovable mermaid from Florence, is another great character. Will we be seeing her in Luminaire? If so, can you give any hints about her journey in the sequel?
Yolee is a huge part of Florence’s life, and she does feature prominently in Luminaire. The events that follow will help her grow as a young mer. As for hints... Yolee will continue to be unpredictable.

If you could describe Luminaire in three words, what would they be?

Tournament. Bravery. Merfolk

Since Nawanda Files highlights books into movies, what is your favorite movie that was adapted from a book?
The Wizard of Oz is a classic.

Thank you so much Ciye for stopping by Nawanda Files! Florence is an amazing young adult mermaid story, and Luminaire sounds like a fantastic sequel to the riveting series!
Thanks for having me!
