Books into Movies: 'Divergent' Casts Four, Peter, and Eric!

There has been so much speculation about who will play Four. Literally, thousands have auditioned and I've posted plenty of articles about the rumors. But the one guy who was chosen as the lead male...well he wasn't even whispered about! But I'm actually blown away by the choice. So continue reading to find out who will play Four!

Theo James, twenty-seven year old actor currently starring on CBS's crime drama Golden Boy, will play the lead title of Four. He also played in Downton Abbey for an episode where he died in Lady Mary's bed. One thing is for sure, he is plenty hot and sexy! Probably even more than in the books!

James also commented on getting the role.
"As a fan of Divergent, I am thrilled to have been chosen for the role of Four and to be a part of such a phenomenal story,” James told Entertainment Weekly. “As an actor, I am excited to explore and play this incredibly complex and mysterious character. Director Neil Berger is a remarkably visionary filmmaker. Along with the incredibly talented Shailene Woodley, we are looking forward to the fantastic adventure of bringing this beloved book to life on the big screen for all the fans.”
He's much older than I thought they would cast, but I'm pleasantly surprised. He's not exactly how I pictured Four, but compared to the other choices (Alex Pettyfer and Alexander Ludwig) I do like the choice. And it's much better than the casting for Tris!

Veronica Roth, author of Divergent, comments on the casting choice over on the official Facebook Page (they have a better picture of Theo James, so you should check it out).
"Recently I saw Theo James' screen test with Shailene Woodley, and I was sure within seconds: this was ‘Four,’ no question. Theo is able to capture ‘Four’s’ authority and strength, as well as his depth and sensitivity. He is a perfect match for Shailene's incredibly strong presence as Tris. I'm thrilled!"
That sounds like fantastic news! Shaliene Woodley who released this statement to MTV  should also be happy about the casting as well.
“You cannot walk in that room in pretty little boots and pretend you’re a man. I’m sorry. You need to walk in there, and you need to not have muscles that look good and not actually work. There have been a few guys that have this power about them. It’s a natural masculine power that some people have and some people don’t."
I think Theo James exudes some manliness.

Eric, the Dauntless leader, has also been cast! Jai Courtney will play the role as the rough-around-the-edges character. His most notable roles have been in recent action flicks Jack Reacher and A Good Day to Die Hard. Again, his casting is older than the books, but still a good choice I think.

UPDATE: Miles Teller has now been cast as Peter. Tris' enemy during the Dauntless initiation. Bonus Tidbit - Teller also stars with Shailene Woodley in Sundance movie Spectacular Now. He's also on the big screen right now, starring in 21 & Over. I think he's a good actor, and he looks a little like how I pictured Peter. But he definitely doesn't look like the typical arrogant, asshole that I thought would be cast as Peter. What do you think?

Miles Teller also tweeted below about the news with #TeamPeter heating up twitter!

The others that have been cast are:

Maggie Q as Tori
Ansel Englort as Caleb
Zoe Kravitz as Christina
Kate Winslet as Jeannine Matthews

Like the casting for Four? Did you picture someone else? Sound off below!

  1. I'm happy. I only hope they can make him look a bit younger, but he is definitely not a bad choice :) I've already seen him in a movie (last Underworld) and he was pretty good.

  2. I'm not entirely convinced, but at least it's not Alex Prettyfer, I mean Pettyfer :)

  3. On a whole, I am pretty happy with the casting we've gotten. Even though I have issues with Theo's age, I think he is cute and am excited to see how he plays Four. He looks older in pics than a few interviews I saw on youtube today so that made me feel a lot better too. Some of the other rumored choices were terrible so I'm glad none of them got it. lol

This Eric is not even close to how I saw him, but I hope he transform well. :)

  4. I totally agree with Cayce, at least it's not Pettyfer or Cato. Haha. I'm not exactly disappointed... but I'm not excited either. I need to see some promotional images and/or trailers to get a vibe for Theo. From the pictures I'm seeing, he just seems a bit old. Regardless, I am glad that they picked someone less main-stream.

  5. I'm actually pretty happy with the choice for his casting! Like you said he's better than a few of the other choices they had, and I'm looking forward to seeing him as Four! AND. I had no idea that he was the same guy from that Golden Boy show! Definitely going to watch it now.

  6. Ug. He does not look at all like Four. I think Teller should be able to pull off Peter, though.
Also, Divergent was written by Veronica Roth, not Veronica Rossi (author of the Under the Never Sky trilogy). Just me being OCD, sorry.
Thank you guys so much for what you do! Nawanda Files is where I get all my movie news, and I value your reviews greatly.

    1. Ahh! I love Veronica Rossi so much I subconsciously add her name everywhere, lol :) Thanks for the catch! It's now fixed.

I'm glad you like our movie news posts ;)

  7. Theo James is hot. I saw a preview of his show, Golden Boy, and he's shirtless, and WOWZA. I believe he can be a really great Four, if not close to perfect. :)

Also, I saw 21 and Over with Miles Teller, and his character was so over the top and witty, I think it'll be cool to see how he'll take that dry humor act and transform it into Peter's attitude act for the movie.
