Books into Movies: 'The Fault in Our Stars' Offers Shailene Woodley Lead Role As Hazel

Breaking news about the movie adapation of John Green's The Fault in Our Stars! Hazel has been cast! And she's a familiar face. Some may hate the news, others may rejoice. Shailene Woodley, the same actress who will be heating up the screens as Tris in Divergent has been offered the role for Hazel. Continue reading for more details!

CASTING NEWS

Shailene Woodley is everywhere. Or at least she will be next year. In addition to landing the lead for Divergent, the most anticipated YA adapation. She's playing Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming Spider-Man flick. Now, I've stated my own opinions of the Tris casting many times. I don't think she fits the look for Tris and nor do I really like her as an actress. I wish I had better thoughts about the casting for The Fault in Our Stars. But alas, I have the same critique. She doesn't look at all like Hazel. Where's the puffy cheeks and round face? Mae Whitman was the perfect actress in my opinion.

I also fear that we're going to get a Woodley overload. With her playing so many iconic characters it might just be...well a bit much. Is there a shortage of young talent in Hollywood or something?

John Green was quick to support the casting choice over at Entertainment Weekly
“I am absolutely thrilled that Shailene will be playing Hazel in The Fault in Our Stars,” John Green says. “It means a lot to me that she is a fan of the book, and I know from our conversations that she has a profound understanding of Hazel. Watching her audition, I felt like Hazel Grace Lancaster was talking to me. It was eerie–and very exciting.”
The producers are the same ones that brought us Twilight and Safe Haven. So they have experience adapting books. Producer, Wyck Gordfey, explains the production process and their choice for Hazel.
"When choosing the writers, director and now our first actor for Fault we’ve gone with the people that have had the strongest, most emotional and insightful connection to the material. Shailene’s love of the book and dedication to the character was evident in not only her pursuit of the role but her delivery of the essence of Hazel in her audition. I have no doubt that she will deliver a Hazel that will floor both fans of the book and those who have yet to be introduced to the transcendent story of The Fault in Our Stars.”
The director, Josh Boone, also supported the young actress.
“During our exhaustive search to find Hazel Grace Lancaster, I saw some stunning auditions by today’s finest young actresses. Over 250 girls read for the part, but it wasn’t until Shailene stepped in front of the camera that I truly saw Hazel for the first time. It was like lightning striking. I can’t wait for the rest of the world to see what I have.”
The news is that Woodley has been offered the role. But it's a long shot that she'll decline. So it's a safe bet this is a go. I'm kind of bummed because TFiOS might be one of my all time favorite contemporary books. But I'll have to move on and be excited about the casting for Augustus Waters!

Now I'll leave you lovely followers--who, like me, might not be enthused about this news--with some tweets from John Green. If anyone can convince me to root for Shailene Woodley as Hazel...it's this guy!

  1. I think it's overload too. Same actresses over and over.

  2. I've never seen her act, but from what I've seen of in her interviews I can't say I really like her as a person. I'm kind of hoping she'll blow me away as Tris, though. I just wonder why she's so popular all of the sudden!

  3. Yeah seriously! She's EVERYTHING lately. All the authors keep saying she's THE CHARACTER so that's the only thing that really has me on board with it all. I'm just dying to see her actually act them. *sigh*

  4. I haven't read Fault in Our Stars so I can't compare her to the character. But I am still generally disappointed. I hate how she's getting all these huge roles so close together. There's also so many talents out there waiting to be discovered!

  5. NOT COOL. I don't mind her acting, but give another actress a chance! She'll be in 3 divergent movie adaptions and a John Green book adaption too? It's like Ryan Reynolds playing a zillion comic book characters. He's pretty much the only person who can do it and it not be overload, amiright?

  6. The praise is so high for this book on all corners, I think I'm just going to have to try and read it myself.
