Books into Movies: 'The Maze Runner' Casting News, 'Divergent' Filming News and much more!

Another roundup of this week's movie news! There's a bit of everything. Casting for The Maze Runner heats up with Thomas while Divergent finishes off its cast and starts filming. Plus, updates on the production of Vampire Academy and a look at the movie tie-in books for The Mortal Instruments. Continue reading to find out more!

The Mortal Instruments

The movie will be in theaters August 23rd, so of course there are some new movie tie-in books as well as companion guides. Take a look at them below!

This is the tie-in book. Much cooler than the ones that feature faces of the actors! Instead they smacked that movie poster right on the book. I actually like this much better than the original book cover!

This is a guidebook to the Shadowhunter's world. Love the graphics, but I'm not usually keen on picking up guidebooks for movies based on books (though I confess to having the one for Harry Potter). But I think I'll pass on this one.

This is a companion (not a guide to the world) to the movie. Again, cool illustrations. If you're wondering what the difference is between the guidebook and the companion. I'm guessing that the companion will feature stills and behind the scenes pictures from the movies.

I have the huge Harry Potter one and the little Hunger Games companions, and really they're just to look at pictures and get some fun facts about the movie making process.

More people have been cast and a very surprise omission! First on the most shocking news. Uriah, the Dauntless member who befriends Tris, will not appear in the first film. I think this has to be the most surprising given the fact that Uriah really helps Tris' transition into the new faction. Though it does appear that he will be cast for the second and third movies.

Tris' parents have officially been cast! Are you a Scandal fan, then maybe you'll recognize Tony Goldwyn, who will be Tris' father. He plays the president in the ABC television show. Beside him, Tris' mother will be helmed by Ashley Judd. In my opinion, great casting choices for both parents. They're strong actors with great credits. And it helps that I can believe Shaliene Woodley was spawned from both of them.

Less notably, the character of Lauren -- a Dauntless member -- will be played by Justine Wascheberger.
Missed the casting news posts for the other characters? If you want the full low down, be sure to visit the Divergent Book into Movie news on Nawanda Files or you can take a quick peek at IMDB.

The Maze Runner

This is probably much bigger than any Divergent news. The lead has been cast for The Maze Runner! And any Teen Wolf fans out there will probably be jumping for joy.

Dylan O’Brien will play Thomas. O'Brien's most notable role is the goofy but likable Stiles on MTV's Teen Wolf. It's surprising that he'll be the lead, considering I really thought he was typecast as the sidekick. But very exciting indeed!

The second casting news: Ki Hong Lee will play Minho! He's a character that fights alongside Thomas and becomes his second-in-command of sorts, leading the Runners.

Here are some tweets from O'Brien and director, Wes Ball, talking about the casting news.
Gally, Alby, and Newt have already been cast with Will Poulter, Aml Ameen, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster playing the respective roles. Kaya Scodelario has also been cast as Teresa.

Filming should begin soon, considering this movie is set to release before Divergent in 2014.

Fans took to twitter to reveal some cool set pieces being built for the movie. Check them out below!

While filming has now started, the movie is slated for March 21st, 2014. Here's my biggest question: Will filming be completed in Chicago before Lollapalooza in August? The concert festival seems like a huge conflict in scheduling. My spidey senses say everything will be wrapped up by then.

Vampire Academy

So casting for the three leads have already been settled, but the movie is now in production. The company has given clear updates on where they are at in the process via the Facebook Page.
It’s been awhile since our last update, so we want to take this opportunity to get everyone caught up on our progress and all the production news for the movie.
1.    Casting. This is the most asked about issue by the fans. So here’s the deal! Casting for the remaining characters for the first film is officially underway once again.
2     Locations. The final locations for shooting are now being decided by our director Mark Waters. The big news is we will be shooting the movie in Europe, mostly in and around the UK, with additional photography planned in Montana.
3.    Green light. The project was officially declared to proceed as of April 1. Our targeted (estimated) date to begin production is the last week in May.
4.    The Movie Crew has begun work with Mark in the UK, who is already in London. We are assembling an amazing line up of seasoned behind-the-scenes production talent for all the important work to be done.
5.    The Weinstein Company is busy at work developing their plans to launch both the Official Movie Web Page and social media campaign and marketing for the film. We look forward to working closely with them in the near future, as they begin to roll out their exciting new plans.
The tentative release date for the film is February 14th, 2014 and will be titled Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters. That seems super early since they are way behind the process for Divergent and The Maze Runner -- both of which have later release dates. Filming is scheduled for this summer. So this may be a quick turnaround.

My thoughts: This is still the adaptation to beat. I'm sorry, Divergent -- but the casting for the dystopian isn't my favorite. And with Vampire Academy, we not only have a stellar cast but the screenwriter who wrote Heathers. This movie is stacked. Hopefully they just don't rush it and execute it poorly.

Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1)Infernal Devices

Yes! Cassandra Clare's other popular series has hired a screenwriter. Stephanie Sanditz will pen the script. She's better known as an actress than writer, so this is kind of an odd choice. But I think the ultimate production of this prequel series will depend on the success of The Mortal Instruments movie this August. If it goes down the tubes like Beautiful Creatures, the production of this movie looks bleak.

My personal favorite news: Dylan O'Brian cast as the lead in The Maze Runner. Who knew the sidekick could become the hero?!

 What's your favorite piece of books into movies news this week? Like the covers for the TMI tie-in books? Super excited for Vampire Academy? Do you think the Infernal Devices movie will happen? Sound off below!

  1. I actually just re-read or rather listened to Divergent on a road trip last weekend. I'm with you, I'm not a huge fan of the casting, but I think my favorite character to actor match up is Ashley Judd. She seems like the perfect mama Prior!

    I'm trying not to get too excited about VA becoming a movie. I'm so nervous I'll be disappointed because those books are seriously my favorites. I have such vivid pictures in my head from reading the books, I'm worried that I won't like the adaption. That being said, I think it's one of the best casting jobs I've seen in a while!

  2. I've been following the casting news for the DIVERGENT movie, but I had no idea there were people cast for the MAZE RUNNER movie already too. Awesome! And even better, that they're hiring a screenwriter for the INFERNAL DEVICES! I'm a way bigger fan of that series than THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS (though I do like it too). Thanks for sharing all of this awesome YA book to movie news. :)

  3. I LOVE DYLAN O'BRIEN. He will make the perfect Thomas. LOVE IT. And also, the twitter pic "Guy says think before posting on internet.. OK" - major loling right now. It's a bunch of barely built set buildings. No way for anyone to know what it is yet, freak out much?

  4. I love that tie-in book cover for Mortal Instruments - it's definitely so much better than the original. The image is so eye-catching.

    Next year is going to be a fun year for YA lit fans. So many movie adaptations to look forward to! :)

    1. I agree, the book cover is so beautiful! I like that they didn't put the actor's faces on it :)

  5. It scares me that I'm not scared about the Vampire Academy movie; the lead cast;
    the director;
    location (England! WTF O.O);
    EVERYTHING just looks so good I'm actually inclined to believe it will be So. Freaking. Great.

    We shall see.
