Book Mash [6]

A feature on Nawanda Files that is math...for books, where we mash up new and old releases with books, tv and movies. What equals our favorite reads? Find out in the simple equation below.

Combine a band of young students with striking personalities who must work together, a natural disaster situation that feels "impossible," and a situation that is very apocalyptic. What do you get?

Monument 14
by Emmy Laybourne
Series: Monument 14 #1
Publisher: Feiwel & Friends
Release Date: June 5th, 2012

Fourteen kids. One superstore. A million things that go wrong.

In Emmy Laybourne’s action-packed debut novel, six high school kids (some popular, some not), two eighth graders (one a tech genius), and six little kids trapped together in a chain superstore build a refuge for themselves inside. While outside, a series of escalating disasters, beginning with a monster hailstorm and ending with a chemical weapons spill, seems to be tearing the world—as they know it—apart.

I really loved this one -- pretty much for all the reasons I stated in the Mash. It's gritty and powerful and the kids remind me of the ones in Holes (albeit, with a little more mature content strewn in there). Have you read Monument 14? Agree with the mash-up?

This feature will replace Like This, Try This and usually be posted on Fridays. Feel free to create a Book Mash of your own!

  1. Holes and The Day After Tomorrow were the bomb, so I'll clearly have to give this series a shot. (: (Not that I didn't want to read it already.) ;D

    1. The book first! Usually after I finish reading, I start thinking about what movies and other books it reminds me of :)

  3. I've yet to give Monument 14 serious thought because it only semi-interested me. However all three variables are AMAZING in my eyes so obviously I should rethink my original decision.
