Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Book Beginnings & Endings

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish.

Best Beginnings

Find MeUnder The Never Sky BY Veronica Rossi
RELEASEd January 3rd 2012 BY HARPER Collins

THOUGHTS: Have you read this beginning? Holy cow, it's awesome. It involves an introduction to a dome-type world where her enemy traps her in quite a dramatic and lasting way. Basically it starts out with a bang ... and a few deaths.

Find MeThe Scorpio Races BY Maggie Stiefvater
RELEASEd April 18TH 2011 BY Scholastic Press

THOUGHTS: This prologue may just be my all-time favorite. It's rich with imagery and describes Sean Kendrick's father and his love for water horses. It's so powerful that almost nothing in the book compares.

Find MeTaken BY Erin Bowman

THOUGHTS: I absolutely love the beginning of this book. Bowman introduces us to Claysoot where the number of men dwindles every year because 18-year-old boys are "taken." I just wished outside of Claysoot could have been as interesting as inside.

Find MeThe Devouring BY Simon Holt
RELEASED September 1st 2008 BY Little Brown

THOUGHTS: OMG! This one will trick you in the beginning. No lie. I can't really give it away because it would be spoiler-territory, but after the first five pages you will be incredibly shocked.

Find MeUglies BY Scott Westerfeld
RELEASED February 8th BY Simon Pulse

THOUGHTS: I love this book, but after 5 plus years, I can only remember the beginning. So that must mean it's incredibly good to stick around in my head for all these years.

Best Endings

Find MeLIfe After Theft BY Aprilynne Pike

THOUGHTS: That last line. Wow, just wow. I can't quote it because it would give the whole book away, but it left me in shock a little bit. It was just a feeling like "this is over." I loved this book for it's Mean Girls quality -- and that ending solidified it as a favorite.

Find MeDark Star BY Bethany Frenette
RELEASEd October 23rd 2012 BY Disney Hyperion

THOUGHTS: Twists, twists, twists and a sort-of HEA and a true longing for the next one. Love, love, love!

Find MeUnremembered BY Jessica Brody
RELEASEd March 5th 2013 BY Farrar, Straus & Giroux

THOUGHTS: I had no idea where this one was going, and the cliffhanger didn't bother me at all. In fact, I loved it because I was so caught off guard half the time.

THOUGHTS: Grab the tissues! This ending was heart breaking and poignant. As a whole, this one turned out to be the best book of the three in the Unearthly series.

Find MeFind Me BY Romily Bernard

THOUGHTS: I didn't predict all of what would happen. And that's the best part of a brilliant thriller. A shocking AND satisfying ending, but it also leaves me desperately wanting the sequel.

  1. Okay, I haven't checked out too many lists but The Scorpio Races have been on all of them! EEP! So excited to read it for book club soon! :)

  2. I really want to read Uglies and Under the Never Sky! Great to hear that they have such awesome beginnings, that always does a good job at pulling me into a book and making me want to keep reading :)

  3. OMG! UGLIES made it on here XD *still a huge fan after so many years* I remember taking the Devouring from the Library once but I never opened it *fatal mistake* I MUST pick it up soon. I have Dark Star & Unremembered on my shelves right now! Now I want to devour them to see what the endings hold too :D

  4. Hallowed was also my favorite of the three. I'm glad Hand gave every character the subplot in Boundless. It was a nice goodbye. Here is my TTT

  5. I love the beginnings for THE SCORPIO RACES and UNDER THE NEVER SKY. I really need to reread the UGLIES series (I've pretty much forgotten everything that happened in this books). I keep hearing that HALLOWED has a fantastic ending - I need to hurry up and read it soon :)

    Great top ten!

  6. I still need to read Hallowed, Dark Star, Unremembered and Find Me and I totally agree with the beginning of Under the Never Sky :D

    Great list!

  7. I bawled my eyes out at the end of Hallowed. I loved her mother. Sniffles.

  8. Lovely list! I've actually only read UTNS out of all these books, and I didn't much like the beginning of that book because I found it confusing the first time I read it >_<

Thanks for dropping by my TTT post! :D
