Books into Movies: Fallen Casts Its Leads, The Giver Casts Meryl Streep, and More!

More Books into Movies updates this time featuring some really cool casting news *cough cough* Meryl Streep. But somehow every time I think of that actress I remember this...

That never gets old ;) Katniss, FTW.

Here are the books discussed in the post:

Fallen (Fallen, #1)The Giver (The Giver Quartet, #1)The Fault in Our StarsVampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1)City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1)

What the hell? That's seriously my reaction to this news. I didn't even know people were being looked at let alone in negotiations for this film. But guess what? The two leads are already cast!!

That's right. Addison Timlin will play Luce. She's most recently been in the show Zero Hour and has starred in several roles, including a reoccurring spot on Californication. We've never read Fallen here on Nawanda Files, so as far as "looks" go with matching up actors to characters, we don't have much to say. Though we have browsed tumblr and most people think she resembles Luce.

As for the male lead, Jeremy Irvine will be playing Daniel! He's best known for his role in Steven Spielberg's War Horse. The actor was also considered for Four in Divergent. He's a very good actor, so I think this is a solid choice.

Scott Hicks will direct. His films include Shine and Zac Efron movie The Lucky One. My only real concern about this movie is that its going to travel into the Beautiful Creatures territory of campiness. There hasn't been a successful YA adaptation yet with a gothic feel to it. Maybe this will be the first?

And if you don't know what the hell Fallen actually is then here's a little synopsis below. *hint hint* it involved fallen angels.
Fallen is the first in a four-part series, a Gothic romantic thriller that centers around Luce (Timlin), a shy teen who is suspected of killing a boy and is sent to Sword and Cross reform school. The school is filled with frequent supernatural occurrences and it becomes clear that the majority of students are fallen angels on the side of good or evil. A battle commences and a love story with deadly consequences for Luce is formed with two male students who have dark secrets of their own.

The Giver

More cool casting news for Meryl Streep fans! She will be playing the chief elder in the movie. This casting will seriously bump up the movie's credentials. And I think other big names are sure to follow.
Streep will play the chief elder, the authoritarian charged with keeping order in a society that seems utopian. That control is endangered when a young man (Brenton Thwaites) is chosen to be the receiver of memories of life before the “sameness” movement which numbed the population and created conformism. Bridges plays the title character who delivers those memories that unlock a rebellion in the young man.

The Fault in Our Stars

Shailene Woodley has announced that she will be cutting her hair for the role and donating it to Children With Hair Loss. John Green made the announcement on his tumblr for other people to join in and tweet using hairforhazel and itgrowsback. I think this is a pretty cool idea and I'm happy that it's gaining lots of momentum for charities out there.

I'm also excited to see Shailene transform into Hazel, since we all currently know her as Tris at the moment.

Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters

First off, Vampire Academy has released their official teaser trailer, and if you haven't already watched it you can check out HERE along with our reactions at Nawanda Files. Personally, I loved it. Becca and others are skeptical but I think the humor is spot-on for the books.

Now onto the image stills that were also released!

This is creepy, but I think it's worth mentioning that Zoey Deutch looks exactly like Rose. No? Yes? Maybe so? Well, I think so.

Ehhhhhh. First image of Dimitri and I do not like that turtle neck. Or that hair. Boo. All around no.

Lucy Fry (Lissa) is tall! But I love how Zoey Deutch is standing kind of tilted. It feels so much like I-don't-really-give-a-shit kind of stance. Such a Rose pose (I rhyme) so I'm digging it. And then there's Sarah Hyland who looks nothing like she does on Modern Family! Great casting all around.

The Mortal Instruments

I don't have an official OMG of the week, but since City of Bones is releasing in less then a week I'd thought I'd share some news. First, here's a gif with JCB looking oh so much like David Bowie from the Labyrinth.

It seriously makes me laugh every time I see it. Although, I am holding out hope this movie won't be as campy as it looks.

Secondly, early reviews are coming in from the Hollywood premiere and they are mostly positive with some minor critical notes. I think some fans have been concerned with Godfrey Gao's role as Magnus Bane. There has been speculation that his part was re-dubbed or went through ADR in post and that the voice on screen wasn't actually live. I haven't seen the film, so I can't add any opinion on that. If it is true, it's going to be a little disappointing just in the fact that it might take away from the scene.

Other than that, I'm pretty pumped for next week. Midnight showing is a go!

My personal favorite news: Fallen casts the leads. Where the hell did this come from? I feel so blindsided (in a good, surprising way) that I can't help but choose this as my fav of the week. Good work, Fallen, good work.

What movie are you dying to see? What's your favorite piece of books into movies news this week?  Sound off below!

  1. I love that Shailene is donating her hair. That girl has some fine hair and it's generous of her. We all know how much hair mean to girls and I think it's quite noble. Plus, it'll really help to get into character. I think it'll help at least. Anyhow, I hope TMI won't be a disappointment. I think Fallen will most likely not live up to the hype when it goes to big screen. I don't recommend the books either. The first one was good, nothing incredible and the second one went with the title--Torment. The thrid one--I really don't know how I pushed through. Tried reading 4th and final one, but still haven't finished. It's been almost a year since I tried and a few times after that. So yeah.. The actors look good though and for their sake, I hope it won't be disastrous.

  2. Those positive reviews of TMI lifts my hope. A little more than a week to go!!

Same with the VA Movie *fingers crossed*

  3. With all the talk about The Fault In Our Stars, it makes me really want to pick up my copy and read it. And, City Of Bones--I need to find someone to go see that with soon! :P

  4. Aha, I love Jennifer Lawrence. I own all the Fallen books but have yet to read even one, all the negative reviews are discouraging. The VA trailer was a bit disappointing for me, although I so agree about Rose-amazing casting! Dimitri isn't at all what I pictured.

  5. I'm excited for some of these movies, but the VA trailor was kind of disappointing. I wasn't excited about my most favourite book series to be made into a movie in the first place because of how bad it could end up being, and after I saw trailor, my expectation are lower. I know the release date is far away, but if nothing that they show in between that time raises my expectations on the movie, then I won't go see it. I don't have a problem with most of the actors, I just don't like what I've seen so far.
Whereas, the City of Bones movie looks awesome. I still didn't get a chance to see the movie yet (there are reasons why), but I will soon.
