Top Ten Tuesday: Books We'd Love to See as a Movie or TV Show

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish.

Hurry and Green-light these babies!

THE 5 BEST TV SHOWS (that should be made)

Find MeSweet Evil by Wendy Higgins
RELEASED May 1st 2012 BY HarperTeen

The Sweet Trilogy: When I worked for The CW, I was trying to push for this to become a show on the network (not that my lowly position as an assistant had much weight) but still, I tried! It has the perfect cast of characters and a premise (the son of lust!) that'll attract screaming girls everywhere. Love!!

Find MeDArk Star By Bethany Frenette
RELEASED OCTOBER 23RD 2012 BY Disney Hyperion

Dark Star series: The mythology is so original that this deserves some time up on the screen, and I adore each character enough that they could definitely hold their own as a dynamic cast.

Find MeTHE Iron King by Julie Kagawa
RELEASED February 1st 2010 BY Harlequin Teen

The Iron Fey saga: So many books to use for material! Seriously, the world is rich. The characters are oozing with personality. I could see this on maybe The CW (who's pulling for more high-concept shows) or possibly a cable network willing to spend some serious cash for the set design to the Nevernever. Syfy could be up for the challenge!

Find MeSpark BY Brigid Kemmerer
RELEASED August 28th 2012 by K-Teen

The Elemental series: Gah! The Merrick brothers on screen *fans self* When I first started reading this series, I pictured it as a show a la One Tree Hill. Brother drama? Check!

Find MeUnearthly BY Cynthia Hand
RELEASED January 4TH 2011 BY HarperTeen

Unearthly series: I would love to see this on The CW (who developed the script one year) or ABC Family. It's been so long for a tv show to be set in the mountains, and I doubt there's been one in the Teton area. Plus, angels? Yes, please! (if done well, that is.)

THE 5 BEST MOVIES (that should be made)

Find MeInsignia BY S.J. Kincaid
RELEASED July 10th 2012 BY Katherine Tegen Books

Insignia: Hello, this book is a better version of Ender's Game in my opinion. So overlooked recently that it shocks me to my core. This is a book that can rival J.K. Rowling. No lie. And it deserves to be a film as much as Harry Potter. Rich, amazing, characters you love -- 100% film worthy!

Find MeUglies BY Scott Westerfeld
RELEASED February 8th 2005 BY Simon Pulse

Uglies: How is this not a movie yet?! It boggles my mind. Maybe morphing teens into super-beautiful people just cannot translate on screen, but I hope they find a way to make it work. This is a book that redefined science fiction in Young Adult. Hell, it opened the genre right there alongside Twilight with paranormal YA and A Great and Terrible Beauty with historical YA. (the latter would be a great tv show, actually!)

Find Me THE Devouring by Simon Holt
RELEASED September 1st 2008 BY Little Brown and Company

The Devouring: Perfect horror film. It has the makings for a good adaptation just like any Stephen King novel. If you love horror books, pick this one up because it's probably the most heart-pumping and twisty one I've read yet.

Find MeLife After Theft BY Aprilynne Pike
RELEASED April 30th 2013 BY HArperTeen

Life after Theft: So this would be a perfect Disney original movie or ABC Family original film. With the ghost-plot, it's not necessarily straight to theaters, Mean Girls-style, but the whacky premise has merit to show on tv. As it should!

Find MeBreathe by Sarah Crossan
RELEASED October 2nd 2012 by Greenwillow

Breathe: It's high-concept enough to land on the big screen, and since Crossan wrote this in three POVs, it's perfect for adaptation. Aren't you sick of the movie adapts where we follow one person around? The multi-perspectives will make this one a fast-paced film for sure. Plus, after Resist, this has been solidified as my favorite dystopian series EVER!

We feature books-into-movies news at Nawanda Files and we're certified TV junkies. I even got paid to watch television (yes, this is true. What tv network, you ask? Read Sweet Evil's blurb atop to find out) and I wrote about pop culture (the best job ever!), which lasted far longer than expected and somedays, I wish I was still there. So this Top Ten was super fun for us (or rather me since I wrote it).

Have a Top Ten? Comment and leave your link! I'll be sure to stop by ;)

  1. I didn't know you worked at the CW before! That's pretty awesome!

I would have loved to have seen Unearthly as a show. I'm sad it didn't happen. And I really must read Insignia!

    1. Yep, it was pretty much the coolest job I've ever had. I even got to interview the cast of the Vampire Diaries (in a video interview). I have never been so nervous in my life. I shake just thinking about it! I was super sad when Unearthly didn't get green-lit for a pilot too.

  2. Unearthly would be an amazing TV show! I really love that series :) I think Breathe would be awesome too, especially since it has a great plot for a movie.

    1. Breathe's plot is really good! Now that I think about it, the only hiccup would be showing the air-masks that they always wear. When I was reading, I usually pictured them without the masks on, even though they were always covering their mouths and noses.

  3. Oh Unearthly! I can only imagine how amazing it would be. I think it should happen as you don't have a lot of TV shows with angles. Fingers crossed! Uglies would be an amazing movie and a really educational one. Great post :)

    1. There really hasn't been tv shows with angels, has there? I think the closest may be Supernatural.

  4. Love seeing The Devouring on your list! I don't know many other people who've read it, so I'm happy to share my love for it. The Devouring was so, SO creepy. Everything about this title is the perfect set-up for a horror movie: a historical set-up, jump-out-of-the-dark scares, plus eerie, chilling scenes.

    1. I LOVE the Devouring. I haven't had time to read the sequel but I bought it right after I finished the Devouring. It's by far my fav YA horror. I do wish more people would read it, and I love that you have, Bekka ;)

  5. The Uglies -- You're so right! How has it not been made into a movie yet!?! It would totally rock.

  6. Wow, that's cool you worked for The CW. I don't think I've read any of these yet, BUT Insignia sounds awesome and I think it would be a fab film for both guys and girls.

    1. Thanks Lauren :) It was the best job ever, especially since I'm pretty much obsessed with the CW. When I was younger, I used to watch promos for each new season (even when it was the WB) and I'd compare them to the last (by ranking them!) Such a tv nerd.

Insignia would most definitely appeal to all genders, which is perfect for a movie!

  7. Good list, I would love to see the Uglies as a movie but I do feel like the movie wouldn't get the pretties or the specials right with how they're suppose to look.

    1. Yeah, I do think that'd be a downside, which maybe is why it hasn't ever been made yet.

  12. I've only read Breathe, but yes - it would work great as a film! It would be especially intriguing to see how the dome would look like and the safe haven where the resistance is. I really need to read Unearthly soon, because I've heard nothing but great things about it!

  15. Okay, I'll love to see the Merrick brothers on screen just to finally see and get how hot they were. I've read Storm, but I just don't get why people think they're just so hot. D:
The Iron King would be awesome as a tv show. And we get to see Ash! :D<3
    Great list Becca! (:

  16. Syfy would make a great Iron Fey TV show; it would be AMAZING if they did it AND brought Warehouse 13 back from Why-the-FUCK-was-it-cancelled land.

  19. Love your TV Show picks! Some shows are meant to be TV shows. Unearthly and Sweet Evil would be great. CW is definitely the home for YA book to tv shows

    1. Right? They'd be PERFECT for the CW. It must happen! And strangely enough, the CW actually considered both of them. I think Unearthly got a little farther in the development process.
