They say all it takes is one wrong move and you lose the game. One false step and you’re trapped. One slip-up in your choice of words and you ruin a friendship forever. That is what they say. They say I lost.

I do not believe them.

At the end of the summer after graduation, Adrienne wonders what happened to cause her life to be in ruins. She isn’t getting along with her mom, her stepsister isn’t talking to her, and, to top it off, the boy she’s been in love with doesn’t want anything to do with her. She believes the turning point was a choice she made at graduation. When she wakes up the next day, she has been transported back three months to that moment, the one where everything started to fall apart.

Adrienne realizes she has been given a second chance—and this time she doesn’t want to mess anything up. Reliving the entire summer, though, turns out to be a lot harder than she thought. As the same days and weeks go by, she starts to see how simple decisions can make a huge impact on the world around her. Despite knowing some of what lies ahead, there are some things she didn’t anticipate. She thought she knew what mistake led her to where she ended up the first time. She was wrong.

And by the time summer is over, she discovers what was really at stake.

Interview

I'm so excited to have Jessica Sankiewicz at Nawanda Files today! She's a well-known blogger over at Thoughts at One in the Morning, and she's here to answer some questions about her recently published novel If Only We, which I cannot wait to read!

What can readers expect from your novel If Only We?

A range of emotion and hopefully an eye-opening experience. It's not just about time travel or second chances—it makes you think about choices you make.

Did anything inspire the creation of your novel?

Honestly, it all started with the scene between Adrienne and Chevy in the beginning. My gets-lost-in-random-trains-of-thought mind took it to the next level, wondering what would happen if something was done differently. Whether it would end the same. Then the idea was born.

Adrienne relives her summer (which sounds dangerous and so cool)—how would you describe her character?

She's usually pretty level-headed and plays it safe, but the first time through she did something very unlike her. The second time she has to find the right balance there and how to face challenges, the repeat ones and new ones. She wants everything to work out the way it should and she's determined to make that happen.

And if you could compare Adrienne to a YA or NA character from another book, who would she be most like?

I thought for a moment about some of my favorite books to see if there are any characters like Adrienne in them and one came to mind. Annabel from Just Listen by Sarah Dessen. It has been a LONG time since I read it but I remember her keeping to herself and slowly coming to realizations. Adrienne doesn't necessarily keep to herself, but she isn't very social and sticks to people she's close to and family. And Adrienne faces a few situations that teach her a lot about life.

Here at Nawanda Files, we mash up books. If you could compare your book to a couple other books, tv shows, or movies, what would they be?

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver + Just Listen by Sarah Dessen

What’s your favorite quote from If Only We?

“Nothing is determined by fate. We create our own fate.”

This is a hard one. Describe If Only We in just three words.

Open eyes see.

If you were stranded on a desert island and only a small chunk of If Only We survived, which scene would you hope was with you?

The scene with Adrienne and Chevy at the park when they're sitting on the bench together.

Since Nawanda Files highlights books into movies news, what is your favorite movie that was adapted from a book?

Persuasion by Jane Austen, the Masterpiece Theater version. I watched the movie before reading the book but when I read the book, it really added to how much I loved the movie.
