These Broken Stars
by Amy Kaufman & Meagan Spooner
Series: Starbound #1
Release Date: December 10th, 2013
Publisher: Disney Hyperion

It's a night like any other on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone.

Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they’re worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.

Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other’s arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder—would they be better off staying here forever?

Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won’t be the same people who landed on it.

I'm so excited to have Amy and Meagan on Nawanda Files today! And they're here to discuss the outfits from their GORGEOUS cover!! Also be sure to continue reading for a chance to win These Broken Stars and some cool swag.

There’s no question that we owe our cover designer, the hugely talented Whitney Manger, a huuuuuuge debt of gratitude. We honestly had no idea what the cover of These Broken Stars was going to look like, but from the moment we saw the first comps, we knew we were in expert hands.

As if we needed any extra reassurance, the amazing team at Hyperion showed how committed they were to getting it right when they asked us to send through as much information as we could on the characters’ appearances, so they could be sure to get it right. You do see covers sometimes where the characters just don’t look right at all—not just unlike the way you imagined them, but literally wearing the wrong things, or with the wrong hair color, or worse. We went to work arming our wonderful design team with everything they needed to get it right!

Lilac’s part of the upper class, and they go through historical fads almost as often as they brush their teeth. At the moment our story starts, faux-Victorian is all the rage, so Lilac’s dress has plenty of volume. Of course, a smart girl like Lilac isn’t going to let herself be bound up or slowed down by any of the practicalities of a genuine Victorian dress, and there’s no need, since nobody really knows what they should look like anyway.

Her skirts have plenty of volume (the dress itself, which was made especially for the shoot, has more volume than you can imagine… check out this picture!), but the neckline and shoulders ensure she shows off the pale skin that marks her as upper class.

Oh, Tarver’s outfit. Responsible for one of the highlights of our authoring careers so far. When the Icarus, the starship on which Lilac and Tarver are traveling is shipwrecked, Tarver’s just come from a sparring session, so he’s still in his workout clothes. We knew he was in pants and a t-shirt, but we wanted to be sure we communicated exactly what we meant.

So we spent some quality time leafing through pictures of handsome men in uniform, to make sure we had juuuuuuust the right kind of example pictures to share. Authenticity is important, people! Military dog tags also play a part in the book, and we were keen to have Tarver’s on display. Yet again, our amazing design team obliged! If you peek under his right arm you’ll catch a glimpse of his Gleidel, the gun that’s so important when they crash on an unknown planet, and across his left shoulder you can see the strap of his holster.

So that’s a peek into how the outfits on the cover of These Broken Stars came to be. We think they’re perfect, and they really do look perfect!

Lilac's Gorgeous Dress: A Look at These Broken Stars' Cover Art

  1. I have actually never heard of book art, very interesting concept, seems almost as much work goes into the cover as the book itself.

  2. I'm a big fan of the cover. It's always nice to go behind the scenes. I can't wait for the book to be released!

  3. The cover looks great! It's awesome that this book had such a dedicated team behind it and that they wanted to get even the smallest details right.

  4. It's an amazing cover. The team did a really good job. I'm really excited for the book!

  5. This comment has been removed by the author.

  6. Wow what an amazing tour stop! The cover is beautiful and eye-catching and I'm glad the story in between its pages is fantastic too. Thanks for sharing!

  7. Very cool - the cover means so much more now that I have read the book - SO GOOD

  8. this sounds so amazing!!! i never knew that it took so much to create a book cover. I am a really big reader and a talented artist if i could this would totally be my dream job!!!!!!!!!

  9. Just the cover is beautiful, that's not even getting in to what's inside! Definitely added to my TBR!

  10. It was really interesting what happens to get the finished product of a book cover. All the hard work paid off! ;)

  11. Super excited to read the book particularly because it is a collaboration. Curious to see how it plays out.

  12. What I'm really loving about this book tour is that we get to see all sides of the book making process.

  13. I just love the cover! I am always interested in cover art and the stuff that goes on with it! So cool!

  14. I love the cover and the dress! It's always cool to see the behind-the-scenes and the models when they're not posing for the pictures. :) I haven't been reading many sci fi novels, but These Broken Stars looks really intriguing! :)

  15. Oh gosh that dress is real! I want it so badly haha. I love the details in the cover. Thanks for sharing this behind-the-scene!

  16. I have been wanting to read this book, it looks truly amazing! It has been on my to read list on Goodreads for awhile. Thank you for the amazing giveaway!!!

  17. LOVE the Behind the Scenes of the cover shooting, I also thought the dress was fake. So gorgeous. I hear nothing but good things about the book and can not wait to read it!

  18. OMG These Broken Stars is one of my favourite three reads of 2013 and I just looooove that we get a small glimpse behind the scenes. Isn't her dress stunning? Thanks for sharing this awesome post!

  19. I love this cover and after reading the book I couldn't but appreciate it even more! It fits the story perfectly! :) Great post, ladies :)

  20. I'm glad they took the time to make sure they got it as close to accurate as possible. I have to agree that when the cover is completely different from the way the author describes the characters, it is a slight disappointment. Plus, that dress is such an eye grabber! My eye goes straight to it each time!

  21. Ahhhhh this was my favorite post on the tour so far! I just adore this cover. I'm a tad bit obsessed with it. So to see the process is just magical. <3 Thanks for sharing!

And the cover does the book justice. Completely.

  22. I LOVE this cover. It is amazing that the dress in the picture is real - I assume that there was some artistic help going on there - This must have been one amazing photo shoot!

  23. I love seeing what goes behind making a book cover and I absolutely love this cover!!

  24. Wow! I'm amazed they had so much say in what went into the cover. Now I'm even more excited to read this!

  25. Love the attention to detail for creating the cover! I read a really good book recently where the girl's supposed to be gorgeous, but the cover model is sickly thin to me. I want the cover to reflect the characters, otherwise, why bother sticking people on there in the first place?

  26. I absolutely love the cover! Its to die for! I love how much detail went into it. As it says in the article I have read books that have not been close to how the character was portrayed at all.

  27. I love it when covers match the characters and even seem to show a scene that might have been in the story. This one is gorgeous and eyecatching.

  28. I love that the DH team put so much effort into making this cover special and specific to the novel. When I first studied the cover, actually studied it, I saw a lot of those small details, and I wanted to read it that much more. Then, when I was in the middle of reading it, I would flip back to the cover and double check it. The final product is one of my favorite covers of 2013. It's lovely!

  29. Of course I LOVE the cover, first thing that dragged me to the book c: I find it awesome that not only was a lot of effort put into the dress but also what Tarver was wearing

  30. I love the shade of green! It's so vibrant. Can't wait for the release date!

  31. the cover is GORGEOUS. those colors and Lilac and Tarvar reaching for each other is just breathtaking

  32. The cover is amazing, the process is very cool... but what I really want that dress. I am not girly, I don't wear dresses often.. BUT THAT DRESS!!!!

  33. Beautiful cover, beautiful dress!! I love it ALL!!!!!
