VAMPIRE ACADEMY

POST-PRODUCTION NEWS

With a February release date, Vampire Academy is gearing up with more promotion. Fandango made a list of "9 Secrets of Vampire Academy." Here are my two favorites:
The film nearly didn’t happen. When the project came to producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford at the height of Twilight’s popularity, they resisted reading Richelle Mead’s books, fearing vampire overkill. When their fellow producer Michael Preger wore them down, they realised what they’d missed. “Eventually we read it, and it was amazing. We knew we had to be involved in it,” says Murphy. And anyway, vampires are immortal, adds Montford: “So there is no vampire overkill!”
Um...so glad they read the book! It's nothing like Twilight (except, you know, the vampires). Hopefully it will translate well on screen.

Danila Kozlovsky likes the “mystery” of his character, Dimitri Belikov. “He listens to old music, he reads cowboy books, and he wears long trenchcoats. I would say he has an old soul, but he’s 24 years old. His mystery is very attractive.” But, he insists, finding the character was a challenge. “He’s almost perfect, and it’s hard to be like Dimitri. It wouldn’t be humble to say I’m like him!”
I cannot way to see Danila as Dimitri! For the full list of "secrets" visit Fandango.

There have been many new stills from Vampire Academy. We picked our favorites below!

YESSSSSS! It looks like Lissa is working her magic ;)

That hair! Seriously, the biggest disappointment will be if that hair doesn't look good on screen. Right now, I'm nervous. Danila is an attractive guy, but that hair ages him.

This is one of the main reasons I'll be seeing this movie. I'm praying that the chemistry in the books between Rose and Dimitri translates to film.

The movie tie-in book was also revealed, and I've got to say that I'm thinking about snagging me a copy. It's no secret that Richelle Meade might just have the worst luck with book covers. Both VA and Bloodlines have some not-so-great covers, but the movie tie-in cover seriously makes up for it. I love the pink and the sass. Plus, the bond between Lissa and Rose is one of the best aspects of VA

HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE

POST-PRODUCTION NEWS

The director, Francis Lawrence, sat down with NY Mag to talk about the upcoming Hunger Games film. The most notable topic...the love triangle.

I don't know about any of you, but I've never been a fan of the love triangle in Hunger Games. Gale who? But I'll be honest, I was disappointed with how Peeta's character and the love story was handled in the first movie. We didn't really get to see his motivations for anything.

NY Mag must have been thinking the same thing because they said to Lawrence:
The first film skimped a little on showing us the strategy behind the Katniss-Peeta love story.
Uhhh...yes.

Lawrence's reply:
I felt the same. I felt the love story in general was, um, a bit buried in the first one. I wanted to bring the love story to the surface. And when I say love story, I mean the triangle.
This is where my concern comes in. Love triangle. I don't remember the love triangle being the main focus in book 2. However, in book 1 the romance was a huge part of the story. The reader never really knew Peeta's intentions. (Did he love Katniss or was he playing her?) Which we lost that dynamic completely in the film.

The romance in book 2 doesn't tie into the plot as nicely in my opinion. Amazing secondary characters, like Johanna and Finnick, are introduced. Hopefully, they don't focus too much on Gale-Katniss-Peeta and overshadow what makes book 2 so great. What do you all think?

A new poster was also revealed, and this might be my favorite of the bunch.

It has such a different feel to it, and yet, it's really damn artistic. Nothing like we've seen before with the promotional materials. Also -- it reminds me a lot of folk music. Like this might be the next album cover for Of Monsters and Men

Which leads me into the next topic...the soundtrack! Of Monsters and Men is on the soundtrack with a song called "Silohuettes." The full soundtrack list is below (unsurprisingly featuring a slew of indie artists...plus Christina Aguilera)

1. "Atlas" -- Coldplay
2. "Silhouettes" -- Of Monsters and Men
3. "Elastic Heart" -- Sia (ft. The Weeknd & Diplo)
4. "Lean" -- The National
5. "We Remain" -- Christina Aguilera
6. "Devil May Cry" -- The Weeknd
7. "Who We Are" -- Imagine Dragons
8. "Everybody Wants to Rule The World" -- Lorde
9. "Gale Song" -- The Lumineers
10. "Mirror" -- Ellie Goulding
11. "Capital Letter" -- Patti Smith
12. "Shooting Arrows at the Sky" -- Santigold
13. "Place for Us" -- Mikky Ekko
14. "Lights" -- Phantogram
15. "Angel on Fire" -- Antony and the Johnsons

THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF ASHES

PRE-PRODUCTION NEWS

Do you remember that post a little while back about how City of Ashes may not be happening? The producers basically halted production because of the poor reception of City of Bones. Well, what we thought was dead (at least I did) is now coming back to life.

The film is scheduled to start shooting sometime in 2014, but the start date has not yet been set.

So what went wrong the first time?  Martin Moszkowicz, from Constantin Films, claims that the marketing might not have been targeting the right audience.
Changes to the marketing strategy are in the cards, including the target demo. “Maybe we have targeted too young an audience,” he said. “They are very outspoken, especially in the social media world; they are extremely active. But the readers of the books are from 14 to 34 — that’s the main age group — and maybe some of them had issues with how it was marketed. We need to go behind that, and find out exactly what it was.
I had more issues than just the marketing. The whole execution of the film was kind of half-assed (in my personal opinion).

The producers are gearing up to go ahead with the film, though the 2014 date isn't completely set so we may see it pushed back again.
“It is an ongoing discussion that we are having, and it is not done. We haven’t made a final decision. But we will only move forward — and we plan to move forward — when we feel we are going to get it right,” Moszkowicz said.

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY

WHAT THE FUCKERY A.K.A CASTING NEWS FOR THIS MOVIE

If you've been keeping up to date with this casting, you know that Charlie Hunnam dropped out and had to be replaced. The replacement was chosen about a week ago...

Jamie Dornan! Also known as the sexy sheriff on Once Upon a Time and the sexy Calvin Klein model.

So what do we at Nawanda Files think of this casting? We give it an A+ for snagging a male model. And a C+ for making him your second choice. We're also ecstatic that Theo James (Four in Divergent) did not become Christian Grey, since he was also in talks for the role. There might have been an apocalypse if that occurred...just saying.

The casting continued to heat up, since the producers are still pushing for that August 1st, 2014 release date (though they are delaying filming).

Luke Grimes (True Blood) was cast as Elliot Grey, Christian's brother. Jamie Dornan and Luke Grimes look very similar, so I'm not too surprised or shocked by the casting.
Next is the casting for Annastasia's friend -- Jose Rodriguez. Victor Rasuk landed the role. He's most recently been in the Ashton Kutcher film, Jobs

The casting should be rounding out soon if they want to make there deadline. But I also expect to see some pretty unknown faces for these sub-characters.

OMG OF THE WEEK!

OPTIONED TO TV

Sara Shepard, author of Pretty Little Liars may just have another series heading to TV. As you may know, Pretty Little Liars is one of ABC Family's best running shows. So the CW (our favorite network here at Nawanda Files) has bought the rights to Shepard's new series, The Perfectionists.

It honestly doesn't matter what it is, if a YA Book goes to TV, I will be fangirling all the way.

So what's her new series about? The only official description is that it's a "murder mystery drama" which doesn't give much away considering her other books center around mysteries. However, Shepard did take to twitter with some clues.

So the main character may be a girl who plays the cello and is applying to Julliard. Possibly, a perfectionist musician?

Her other series, Heiresses, has also been reported to be sold to Bravo. There's less information about this deal though. And a reminder -- selling the TV/Movie rights does not guarentee it will actually make it to screen. It may not even be filmed as a pilot. But this is the first step.

    1. We're going to see it this weekend! So hopefully we'll have the movie review up by Monday :) I'm excited for it as well. The reviews I've seen have been positive so far.

  2. Agreed on THG. Some things haven't translated to the movie as well as I wanted them to, but, I can't complain too much, especially since THG was done very well otherwise, for the most part. Catching Fire is REALLY going to be amazing though. Every time I see the trailer I get chills because I remember the parts in the book and I'm like OMG I can't wait to see it brought to life!!! AHHHH!!!!

    1. The Peeta-Katniss romance was actually the only thing I didn't like in THG. Overall, I thought the first movie was well done. I seriously hope Catching Fire is great! I've been avoiding clips so I won't be spoiled by the epicness!! Thanks for stopping by, Jessica :)

  3. Holy shit that is lots of news. I love Jamie Dornan, but I'm scared to death for his acting career thanks to being associated with this movie. I don't know if I'm going to go and watch it, I know of do want to go now since it's Jamie, but still.. Am I interested in pbdsm orn on the big screen? Not really... I'll watch the trailer and then decide on the reaction after it's out. I'll probably watch it at home since I'd be too embarrassed to admit that I actually went to see it to the movies O.o LOL. I want to see Catching Fire so bad already. I actually saw Thor 2 last night and it was freaking amazeballs in my opinion. A solid B+ for the whole movie. I bet Lo and Lily would agree :) Have a great weekend, girls!

    1. Seeing as how Jamie Dornan was basically an unknown (except for OUAT fans) before this, I don't think it will hurt his acting career too badly (hopefully). I'm definitely not going for the bdsm porn-ish aspect either. And I would watch it at home (way less awkward) but I think I'm going to be too curious to see how the hell they're adapting that book, lol. THOR 2... Siiri, I thought that comes out in like another week. O_O Obviously, I've been in a writing cave for far too long. I'll definitely be seeing that this weekend (glad to hear it's amazing!!!). Lo and Lily <3 You're awesome.

  4. Woooha so many news! I need to take this all in. To start from the start - VA thank you brave man for making them read the book. Cause not every book with vampires is Twilight - duh! I cannot wait to see the movie but I'm still so scared because of Dimka - that hair really ages him. Me no likey! :(
About The Hunger Games, somehow at least to me surviving was always in the focus of the books so I don't want this to get to pink and fluffy. My poor guy Gale will break my heart all over again. :(
For the 50 Shades - damn I'll have to see it just because of that guy. The first pick was a disaster to me. Let them change the female character and it might be good :D
Great news girls! Thanks for keeping me up to date! :)

  5. I'm really curious on how they will do the VA movie and I've not seen the first Mortal Instruments movie lol Great post!

  6. Great post Krista, uggh not the love triangle in Catching Fire! Gale is clearly more attractive but I can see how he can emphasise it in the movie.

Oh those 50 shades guys are SOOO HOT. Great picks all round lol

  7. So much I need to comment on! Here we go:

    1. I really don't like long hair on guys, so I'm hoping somehow Danila makes it work. It's a random personal preference. I can't wait to see the movie! I hope it's good because right now it has a bit of a mean girl-ish air, and really it's so much more than that. :)

    2. I was super happy with how The Hunger Games movie turned out, so I expect them to do Catching Fire right. Also, I love the posters so much. Gorgeous design.

    3. I don't know if I even want to watch City of Ashes. City of Bones didn't impress me too much and now that the novelty has worn off, I'm frankly not interested.

    4. I think the CW is a good place for Sara Shepard. I don't like her books much (or PLL for that matter) but they have really cool premises. Maybe it'll be like Season 1 of Gossip Girl with more crime?

    Great post! :)

  8. Ahh THANK YOU for that list of release dates! I really needed that. Also, Zoey Deutch is amazing and even though I haven't read VA I'll watch the movie because of her.
I really hope City of Ashes is better than the first :/
    Awesome post, Becca :)

  9. Would it be really bad to buy the movie edition of VA even though I already have the original designed cover? :$ I WANT IT

  10. Another Sara Shepherd TV series? I'm intrigued! I can't wait for VA and Catching Fire, hoping they'll be great sucesses.

    Thanks for sharing! <33

  11. I don't see the problem with having the actors for Christian and Elliot to look alike, but in the books, Christian is adopted into a wealthy family (Elliot Grey's family). Rich and good looking people hire other good looking people, I guess!

  12. I'm excited and scared about seeing Vampire Academy because a lot of the books-to-movies haven't been that great lately.

  13. Wow! So many great things going on in the book-to-movie world!! I also really love the movie tie-in for Vampire Academy. I'm not a huge fan of movie tie-in covers but that one looks AWESOME. I may have to pick it up as well! Also, the sexy sheriff from Once Upon a Time in 50 Shades of Grey???? O_O I wasn't planning on reading the book or watching the movie but I just may have to if he's going to be in it!

  14. I loathed the green poster disaster so I've to say, not a big fan of the movie tie-in covers (or the movie). I love the red covers of VA, so gorgeous and pink just doesn't go with the series. Also, Dimitri looks way older than 24 in the stills.

Love triangle in Catching Fire? No, no, no! It's my favorite book in the trilogy and I won't be able to handle if it isn't as good. I LOVE the trailers and the soundtrack that has been released that I didn't even think there'd be a chance that I might not love the movie. Now I am. *sighs* I LOVE that IMAX poster thought. Eeeee!

I've no idea what went wrong with City of Bones. I'm unable to. Serious. So I hope City of Ashes is better.

No thoughts on Fifty Shades casting change 'cept meh.

Pretty Little Liars is addictive but I've no idea what THe Perfectionists series is all about. Kinda excited, though. And if the CW picks it up then woot, I'm definitely watching it.

  15. They are different shades of a color, which is magnified with the use of digi tools to create and use in a poster. Furthermore, they are easy to store because they are virtual. One just has to create a folder on their system and can store a number of posters or can share them on your website.
