Books into Movies [143]: Trailers, Releases, and more!

A reoccurring feature at Nawanda Files that covers the latest news on book into movie adaptations. Features casting, filming, post-production news and more!

The full-length trailer has now been released! Watch it below!

So here are my thoughts on this trailer:

1. I LOVE ROSE! Seriously this might have been the perfect casting ever. She's so snarky (just like the books) and yet likable.

2. The modernish theme to the story is pretty cool too. The first shot looked like a dorm room at a normal college.

3. I've been a fan of the marketing since the get-go. You can tell they don't want to take themselves too seriously and get slammed as "another Twilight" and yet it doesn't come off as a parody either.

4. THAT ENDING! Hilarious :D

5. I know I'm in the minority for liking this trailer/marketing/everything about this movie. And I don't care ;)

There has been some disappointed over the trailer by some fans. And the Producer Mike Preger has released a statement via the Official VA Facebook page to address concerns.
Trailers are meant to get people interested who would most likely never be interested otherwise. That’s a herculean task in today’s marketplace. So the elements from the film that are assembled for a trailer are to excite, create interest, and make the film look interesting and entertaining. It is not intended as a snap shot of the story of a film, which is totally impossible to do in a minute, but more an example of the type of scenes, setting, and interesting elements they will see in this movie. So those of us who are looking for some kind of literal representation of this work, just really don’t understand how all of this works.

Vampire Academy marketing is geared towards an edgier millenial crowd than the Twilight affair. Just by taking a look at their cast photo below, it seems like the cast could fit right into a CW show. Do I love it? Hell yes!

Do you hear that? It's the sound of every fan girl squealing in the movie theatre. It's the sound of sheer epicness.

We haven't seen it yet, but we're hoping too sometime this week. And we'll have a review up as soon as we can. So now I have to ask (for those of you who did see it) hot was Finnick? ;)

But really, take to the comments and let us know if you liked the film! Was it better than the first? Did it exceed your expectations of disappoint? Sound off below!

If you're like me, this movie has slipped you by. Probably becuase you don't live in LA or NYC. It released in limited theaters with some mixed reviews, earning a 48% on rotten tomatoes. The consensus is that the acting is superb but the execution was safe considering its subject matter. I'm a little bummed about the news. I was hoping this one was going to be the next Oscar winner (how cool would have that been).

Have you seen this movie? Planning on seeing it? Sound off below!

My personal favorite news: That poster for VA is pretty kickass. I love how they're marketing this movie (even if I'm in the minority on this one).

What movie are you dying to see? What's your favorite piece of books into movies news this week?  Sound off below!

  1. The Book Thief: I'm really hoping a limited release doesn't mean we won't see it in the UK!
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire: Planning to see this at the weekend and can't wait!! Everyone I know who has seen it has more than loved it XD
Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters: Haven't read the books but I saw a trailer a couple of months back and think the move looks awesome!
Divergent: Again, looks fantastic but I still need to read the books (I'm terrible, I know).
The Maze Runner: I would see this even if it didn't look so amazing. Just for Dylan O'Brien's face alone :P
The Fault in Our Stars: I think everyone in the Blogosphere knows my obsession with the book so ... yeah ... WOOOOOO.
If I Stay: I'm so intrigued as to how this is going to play out on the big screen!
The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes: Maybe I'm on my own here, but I really enjoyed the first movie!
Fallen: Man, I remember reading this book in my first year of university (not for school, just I happened to read it at that time lol). I really enjoyed it but never ended up reading the rest of the series :) will def be checking out this movie.
    Fifty Shades of Grey: *tumbleweed*

  2. That was my first time seeing the trailer for VA and now I am excited. I really like the person they have for Rose :) Thanks for the post!!

  3. I didn't really like the teaser trailer, but I'm loving this new trailer--it totally has a comedy vibe to it and excuse me for saying this, but seriously? Serious, depressed and seriously-taken vampires are a history. Blame it on Twilight, if you must. Even True Blood is humorous so.. you can't really argue with the marketing. Maybe I'm just saying this because I LOVE Mean Girls and I'm kind of coming around lol :D YOU HAVEN'T SEEN CF? OMFG. That's scandalous, girls! I LOVED EVERY SINGLE PART OF IT. It was fucking brilliant, I say. What? I didn't even know that The Book Thief was released. I'll probably go and see it when it comes out here in Feb/Jan. I don't really care for th reviews, I'll see it anyway. I hope. I haven't read the book, but I loved the trailer.. so. yeah.

  4. I didn't like the VA trailer but I'll still watch the movie. They are making it lighter than it actually is, but like the producer said, they're trying to attract people that wouldn't otherwise be interested in the film. I still think it would have been a much better TV show.

Catching Fire was amaaazzzing. You're in for a treat. I thought Finnik was hot. The first thing anyone said after the movie finished at our theatre was "Wow". And Catching Fire deserves it.

There seems to be a lot of YA movies coming out, and I don't know if I really want to see them. I don't like the idea of The Book Thief or If I Stay or The Fault in Our Stars as movies because I thought their biggest strengths were in the writing and I don't want to remember them any differently.

In general, I'm not that into many of the YA movies. I'll keep up with The Hunger Games, VA, maybe City of Bones and The Maze Runner and definitely Divergent. I prefer my movies to be action packed rather than based on emotion.

    Great post!

  5. Catching Fire was brilliant. Jennifer Lawrence was extraordinary in her performance. If she wasn't such an amazing actress, it might have taken away from the experience a little bit. YES. Finnick was VERY hot.

  6. I haven't read the books yet, but I think I'll really like the casting of Rose too! It might be fun :) I can't wait to see Catching fire, especially after all the positive tweets I've been seeing lately. So scared for The book thief..

  7. I loved Catching Fire sooooooo much!! I guess that I am going to wait to see the Book Thief on bluray. I expected it to get better ratings. I am sure it will go in and out of the theaters in no time.

  8. Catching Fire was AMAZING. I seriously loved what they did with the movie.
It had been a LONG time since me & my cousin had come out of the movies talking & TALKING about a movie. We were amazed!
Once again I loved Jennifer Lawrence & Josh (I forget his last name) & hate Gale.
Finnick - hot. Yes. *winks* Almost catches fire.
As Mockingjay was NOT my favorite book, by far, now I really have expectancy about it. I hope Katniss to fight & not be... as in the book.

& Vampire Academy *smile* I cannot wait.

  9. OMG I'm so glad I found someone else who loves the Vampire Academy trailer!! I think it looks AMAZING and Zoey is PERFECT as Rose. I think the trailer shows a lot of elements about the book that I loved and I can't wait to see that on film! Also, Catching Fire... SOOOOOO GOOOOOD. It was better than the Hunger Games in my opinion and definitely exceeded my expectations. It was so close to the book. And Sam actually made a great Finnick. I was very pleased with his performance. My friend asked me at the end of the movie what I thought and my response was "Is Mockingjay out yet?" I'm so read to see the last two films!!
