Battle of the Heroes: Ettiene St. Clair (Anna and the French Kiss) v. Cricket Bell (Lola and the Boy Next Door)

"Anna  and  the  French  Kiss"  by  Stephanie  Perkins                                                                                                                                                                                "Lola  and  the  Boy  Next  Door"  by  Stephanie  Perkins

There are two guys that outrank most heroes in YA contemporaries. And both have been spawned from the mind of Stephanie Perkins. Not saying she's a genius...okay, I kind of am. The amazing thing about these heroes is that they're both incredibly different and yet both incredibly swoon-worthy. There is a huge debate in the YA community about which guy is ultimately superior, so it seemed fitting to pit them against one another in the first "Battle of the Heroes". But since these are contemporary's "Book Boyfriend" style. Were going to see which guy is more swoon-worthy.

Let's start with Éttiene St. Clair

He's the lovable Brit that swoops Anna of her feet in Paris. Yes, he speaks French. Yes, he has a British Accent. He's basically 100% charm. There aren't many "nice guys" in romances that have spectacular personalities. Most fall under the "nice-guy-but-boring" category. Not St. Clair. And did I mention, he's cool enough to be referred to by last name only?

Now let's look at Cricket Bell

Cricket is the boy next door. The guy that's super nice but also an awkward geek at heart. He loves inventing things (as any descendant of Alexander Graham Bell would) and he has a soft spot for Lola. Things are complicated by Lola's older boyfriend, but he's the type of guy who will wait *swoon*. He's also extremely tall, which is pretty damn sexy.

Now you may have your own opinion who's the best. But since I'm the judge today, we're going to use my super biased test to see who's the winner.

These scores reflect my biased opinion on who's more compatible Your own scores will obviously vary.

How compatible are our heroes with me? Would we make a good couple? And yes, I'm totally disregarding the fact they have found their soulmates in both books. This is a battle of f*ing heroes "book boyfriend" style.

ETIENNE ST. CLAIR: He speaks French. I don't know French so this might make it difficult to understand him at times. (Yet, Anna doesn't know French and clearly she doesn't have a hard time.) He's swoon-worthy on an epic scale, but I'm shy and his charm would intimidate me. -- 3/5

CRICKET BELL: Hello, inner-geek! He likes inventions. I like science. I think we'd be fairly compatible. -- 4/5

Chance of a Break Up

Would our relationship last? Or is it a sinking ship?

ESC: He's already cheated on a girlfriend for Anna. I'm going to bet he'd cheat on me. *shrugs* just-sayin' -- 2/5

CB: Cricket was willing to wait for Lola and he seems like the super committed type. I feel like if someone were to break things off, it wouldn't be him. -- 4/5

Appearance Appeal

Looks aren't everything...but they do matter some.

ESC --  He's sexy as hell and has great hair. But he's short. I'm not saying short guys are bad, but most of St. Clair's sexiness is from his charm and confidence, not his appearance. And I don't date guys shorter than me (Anna, you rock!) so.... -- 2/5

CB: He's super tall! He's got floppy hair and he wears cool bracelets. Basically, he's every boy-crush I had when I was younger. -- 4/5

Swooning is an important factor. If you can swoon then he can't be a book boyfriend, right?

ESC: The guy speaks French and has a British accent. What else could you possibly ask for? -- 5/5

CB: I love me some inner-geeks, and Cricket has that in spades. He's like Seth from the O.C. While nice and cute, he only has an American accent ;) -- 3/5

It's funny because I do believe St. Clair is sexier between the two (and I liked his love story with Anna better than the Lola/Cricket pairing.) But obviously, Cricket Bell would be my book boyfriend in the end.

I chose which hero would be my book boyfriend. Now it's time for you to decide for yourself.

Even if you haven't read the books, feel free to vote!

Anna is looking forward to her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a great job, a loyal best friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more. Which is why she is less than thrilled about being shipped off to boarding school in Paris--until she meets Étienne St. Clair. Smart, charming, beautiful, Étienne has it all...including a serious girlfriend.

But in the City of Light, wishes have a way of coming true. Will a year of romantic near-misses end with their long-awaited French kiss?

Budding designer Lola Nolan doesn’t believe in fashion...she believes in costume. The more expressive the outfit--more sparkly, more fun, more wild--the better. But even though Lola’s style is outrageous, she’s a devoted daughter and friend with some big plans for the future. And everything is pretty perfect (right down to her hot rocker boyfriend) until the dreaded Bell twins, Calliope and Cricket, return to the neighborhood. When Cricket--a gifted inventor--steps out from his twin sister’s shadow and back into Lola’s life, she must finally reconcile a lifetime of feelings for the boy next door.

"Battles" are open to any bloggers wanting to participate. I usually post battles on Thursdays and I alternate between Battle of the Worlds, Heroes, Heroines, and Villains. It's really casual. Just choose which battle you want to do and post it. You can use my score categories, my banner, etc. Or make up all your own. If you do participate, the linky is below.

  1. Great battle! but I love both of them....difficult choice.

  2. Amazing post! They were both so great :) But Anna's story is definitely my favourite, so I'd pick St.Clair.
    Have a great day!

  3. Etienne! I know French (well, kind of)! Ahh we will speak French together and go to France and he can speak in that gorgeous accent and be all charming as we eat macarons and crepes and it would be awesome. :) I just feel like I would have more fun with Etienne.

  4. My vote is definitely with Cricket ;) I just adore the guy. I never really got the hype that was St. Clair, but he is a great guy and I like him still. Just not as much as the Seth Cohen clone haha. I adored Seth and that's quite a good reference, girl! Cricket is absolutely amazing and agreed--he easily wins this round :D

  5. I haven't read Lola, but I really disliked Etienne, so I'm going with Cricket!

  6. I agree with Cricket as well. He was the first from those companion novels that I met and loved.
