Battle of the Heroines: Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games) v. Rose Hathaway (Vampire Academy)

 Katniss Everdeen   v.   Rose Hathaway

"The Hunger Games"  by  Suzanne Collins                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   "Vampire Academy"  by  Richelle Meade

I'm choosing two fierce ladies from two very different (and popular) books in honor of the Vampire Academy movie that's releasing soon. As a disclaimer, I've only read the first book in the VA series and only the first two books in the THG series. So I'm basing this battle off of the "early" stage of the characters, since we all know characters can develop in series.

I'll be pitting them against one another to see who would be a better heroine to have on my team. If this is your first time stopping by a battle, you will find out quickly that these battles are biased....very, very biased. Proceed with caution.

Here's some background info on the characters before we pit them against one another:

Katniss Everdeen

She's a survivor, a warrior, a bitch on a mission (to stay a live, granted). She does everything for her sister, Prim, and isn't the most "popular" girl in all twelve districts.

Oh yeah, she's also a badass with a bow and arrow.

Rose Hathaway

She's the sassy guardian of her best friend Lissa--a royal Moroi (vampire). Rose is impulsive and a bit reckless. She gets her booze on and knows how to have fun. But if you cross her path, oh man, you better watch your f*cking back. The girl can hold her own.

These scores reflect my biased opinion on who'd make the better friend (and teammate). Your own scores will obviously vary.

A mark of a good friend is how well they'll stay by your side.

KATNISS EVERDEEN: Her loyalty is unfailing when it comes to her sister Prim. But anyone else? It's really up for debate. Yes, she was loyal to Rue (but she reminded her of her sister) but do you know how long it took her to trust Peeta, Finnick, and Joanna? A little too long. -- 3/5

ROSE HATHWAY: Her friendship with Lissa is stone and they almost have a sister-like relationship. Rose is the type of girl that if you're on her team (related or not) she'll fight all the way for you -- 5/5

In An Apocalypse...

If there was an Apocalypse how would they handle the challenge? Would they make a good teammate or drag down my skills in survival (lets pretend like they are top-notch)?

KE: The girl can survive. That's not even a question. -- 5/5

RH: She's got mad survival skills as well, but she can't wield a bow and arrow... -- 4/5

Fun Factor

Being a friend isn't all about survival. You have to let your hair down once and a while.

KE: The only party we see her go to, she's a mood killer. She might as well defined the term "party pooper." I'll give her some slack for being in a dystopian world without sunshines and rainbows, but you can smile once and a while Katniss. SMILE! -- 2/5

RH: The girl knows how to have a good time. I seriously would love to party with this chick (if she were real). -- 5/5

You don't have to be a member of Mensa, but just be able to make some smart decisions. To think with your brain instead of that heart that flutters when a boy walks in the room. And I know it's hard, especially with some smexy guys. (*cough cough* Dimitri)

KE: She's blinded by pride, which makes it really difficult for her to "make" friends and open up to other people. Does she make stupid decisions because of it? Hmmmm. It's a tough call. The ending of THG was ingenious. She conned the games. So I think she's pretty intelligent -- 4/5

RH: She's really good at perception and observation, but she's a little close minded when it comes to "blood whores" and customs of the Moroi. -- 4/5

Katniss might be able to kick some ass, but she wouldn't be a very good teammate. And she wouldn't be a girl I'd call up on a Saturday night for a drink. For that, Rose takes the crown for all around awesome Heroine. Smart, Strong, and Sassy :)

I chose which heroine would make a better teammate/friend. Now it's time for you to decide for yourself.

Losing means certain death.

In a dark vision of the near future, a terrifying reality TV show is taking place. Twelve boys and twelve girls are forced to appear in a live event called the Hunger Games. There is only one rule: kill or be killed.

When sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen steps forward to take her sister's place in the games, she sees it as a death sentence. But Katniss has been close to death before. For her, survival is second nature.

Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They've been on the run, but now they're being dragged back to St. Vladimir's--the very place where they're most in danger. . . . Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy's ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi--the world's fiercest and most dangerous vampires--make Lissa one of them forever.

  1. While I love her, Katniss can be a bit of a loner. Rose would be more fun and I love her sarcasm.

  2. When I read the battle title I immediately thought Katniss was my girl, but after thinking through your reasoning, I'm with you. Rose wins because of her fun (well most of the time). I've read the first 4 in the series and Rose is awesome. Katniss is too, but she's not a lot of fun.

  3. Hahaha, I laughed so hard throughout this post. I'd pick Rose any day of the week, merely because she was my first fictional heroine (aside from Elizabeth Bennet) that I loved and looked up to. Plus, she is a comic relief a lot of the times! Btw, bitch on a mission- LOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!! :'D

  4. I agree with Crystal - I was all for Katniss when I saw the title, but as I read on I totally agree about Rose. I think the difference for me is that while both go through some crazy stuff (and yes this is my subtle hint that you should read the later books in the VA series because Rose gets even better), Katniss in the end only tries to survive, but Rose survives, and then embraces life after that. And nothing gets your mind off the woes of the world better than a good party.

  5. Katniss is one badass chick, but she hasn't trained her whole life. I know you said Rose can't use a bow and arrow, but I wouldn't be surprised if she could - she's trained with a LOT of weapons! And I love that Rose is always up for a good time. Katniss can be a bit of a downer.

  6. Totally agree! Katniss is definitely a survivor jut she's also a bit of a Debby Downer and if I'm going to fight like hell to survive I want to have a little fun when it's over and for that I would definitely call Rose!

  7. Katniss is an awesome heroine and she's definitely a survivor but if I'm going to choose someone who makes a great friend and is fun to be around, that would definitely be Rose! Although, she's a little bitchy at the beginning of the series. She's close minded when it comes to Christian. I definitely like the Rose towards the end of the series better, but I won't elaborate since you haven't read the whole series ;)

  8. I don't think Rose and I would get along. I think the silent, bit loner type like Katniss would be more someone I'd bond with. BUT, I think you are right when it comes to being a team. Rose is so loyal to Lissa, so I think I would trust her more to save my life :) Rose it is.

  9. Its good. It's really really fascinating and interesting. It makes u visualize not just reading the words and what they are supposed to mean.
