Couple of the Day: Sloane & James from The Program

SLOANE & JAMES

"The Program" by Suzanne Young

If you love emotional romances then you need to be reading The Program ASAP. Even though this is a science fiction book, it's really heavy on the romance. Hell, the main plot might as well be centered around the love of Sloane & James. And you know what-- it's epic!!

Let me give you some background. This is a dystopian world in which suicide is an epidemic. In order to cure depression, the program has been invented. It wipes out your memories so that you can start afresh. Only problem for Sloan and James, this means not remembering that they were a couple. But not only a couple -- but a couple in supreme love.

I won't spoil on whether they go through with the program and lose their memories, but let me just say, you will be in a ball of emotions.

Oh, Sloan and James. I'm already getting emotional again just thinking about you two.

Favorite Quote:

You're right, you know," he says. "You're just right for me. And I'd bet my life that we've done this before. Because I can't imagine that I wouldn't have fallen in love with you the first time.”

In Sloane’s world, true feelings are forbidden, teen suicide is an epidemic, and the only solution is The Program.

Sloane knows better than to cry in front of anyone. With suicide now an international epidemic, one outburst could land her in The Program, the only proven course of treatment. Sloane’s parents have already lost one child; Sloane knows they’ll do anything to keep her alive. She also knows that everyone who’s been through The Program returns as a blank slate. Because their depression is gone—but so are their memories.

Under constant surveillance at home and at school, Sloane puts on a brave face and keeps her feelings buried as deep as she can. The only person Sloane can be herself with is James. He’s promised to keep them both safe and out of treatment, and Sloane knows their love is strong enough to withstand anything. But despite the promises they made to each other, it’s getting harder to hide the truth. They are both growing weaker. Depression is setting in. And The Program is coming for them.

  1. I love this book so much! Sloane and James were just . . . aahhhh. The feels were too much to handle.

And that quote you picked was one of my favourites from the whole book - just shows how love can transcend anything, even your own memories!

(Accidentally deleted my other comment. Whoops! Haha)

  2. Gah that sounds so annoying that it is centred on the romance! I pick up dystopians because I'm interested in the world, if I wanted a romance I'd pick a romance :P sorry for the rant, at least the couple here is a good one though!

    1. You definitely have to like heavy romance in your dystopians to like The Program. I think that's the biggest criticism the book gets when readers don't like it. I'm odd, since I actually prefer a big romance element, lol! Thanks for stopping by, Jeann <3
