Spotlight (Interview + Giveaway): For All You Have Left by Laura Miller

I'm so excited to have Laura Miller on Nawanda Files today! She's the author of several new adult books, including: My Butterfly and Butterfly Weeds. She's here on NF today to discuss her newest novel (that just released!!) For All You Have Left.

The premise of For All You Have Left sounds mysterious, sexy, and compelling! What would be the synopsis in a tweet?

A high school sweetheart. A sexy, small-town guy. And a girl with one haunting secret from her past that threatens her present.

What inspired you to write the book?

I tend to write my stories around themes. Butterfly Weeds and My Butterfly are centered on the theme of enduring love. For All You Have Left, however, began as a story about the battle between first loves and true loves. There’s a bit of heartache in the book, which I think most people, including myself, can relate to in some way. But the story also developed into a picture of hope. When life unexpectedly takes a turn for the main character in For All You Have Left, she struggles with moving on while trying to let go of her first love. And there are times she thinks she’ll never be able to do either. And I think this struggle of holding on and letting go and the line we often dance in order to do both at the same time is what inspired me the most in writing For All You Have Left. But I also wanted to inject a secret into this love story, so you’ll get a little mystery as well!

For All You Have Left isn’t your first foray into the publishing world. How has the process for this book been different than Butterfly Weeds and My Butterfly?

My Butterfly (Butterfly Weeds, #2)
I think the process of creating For All You Have Left has been an incredibly different experience from my first two books. Really, each book has had its own journey. Butterfly Weeds was my first novel. At that time, I just had a story I wanted to share, so I wrote it down. I had no idea what to expect when I published it. And since then, I have been so amazed at and grateful for the love and support readers have shown for Will and Julia’s story. In fact, those same readers inspired Will’s story in My Butterfly. Will’s story was never planned. It wasn’t until after readers had expressed an interest in hearing his view point that I sat down to write My Butterfly! So, readers single-handedly inspired the creation of my second novel! And I’m so thankful that they did! For All You Have Left, however, has been an opportunity to tell a different love story, but this time, one with a twist. I’ve enjoyed immensely writing this one. And it’s one I hope you’ll enjoy! It’s full of small-town romance, angst, secrets and heartache but also hope and undying love!

The novel has a small town setting. What drew you to this particular locale?

I grew up on a farm in small-town Missouri, so writing about one comes naturally, I guess. I also think there’s something romantic about little towns and tin roofs and old trucks and gravel roads. Small towns can be so quiet and almost nostalgic—like tiny pieces of the past frozen in time. So, in the end, places like this have a special place in my heart, so I guess that’s why they have a place in my characters’ hearts too! In fact, the hometown of Jorgen Ryker in For All You Have Left was inspired by the little town along the Missouri River Bottoms where I spent the first ten years of my life!

What kind of swoony guys can we expect from For All You Have Left? (Bad boys, nice guys, guys with dark and broken pasts, etc.)

This is a fun question! You can definitely expect a couple sexy and sweet guys—one that’s a little more settled, and one that’s a little more spontaneous—in For All You Have Left. And there’s one with a bruised past, but I can’t tell you who it is! There are also motorcycles and tattoos and small-town boys who will attempt to steal your heart. And all of them are a part of main character Logan Cross’s life, but only one of them shares a porch swing in her future. And I’m so excited for you to piece together who’s who! Part of the novel is solving the mystery behind these men.

Do you write with music? And if so, what songs would be on the playlist for For All You Have Left?

I actually don’t write with music. The characters are so busy filling my head with their own words and thoughts that I have to mute the music while I’m writing and turn it up when I’m not! But there is no doubt songs were always silently playing in the background while I wrote my latest novel—songs like Bruises by Train and Over You by Miranda Lambert. And as the story of For All You Have Left unfolded, this is the playlist that played along with it. Of course, I’m sure there are other songs that could fit into the story as well, and I’m always interested to hear what readers heard as
they read!
