Movie Review: The Amazing Spider-Man 2

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

I saw it! And gah! There were so many amazing moments. I have to say with all the negative reviews from the critics, I was expecting a terrible movie. But, alas, it wasn't terrible. Was it perfect? eh...not really. But it was still very entertaining.

The highlight of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was (shocker) the romance between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacey.

Real life couple Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone reprise their roles and they have some insane chemistry. Oh, and if you haven't seen the SNL skit where they suck face and do this...

then you're missing out.

The humor is another standout. Andrew Garfield nailed Spider-Man's silly antics. Becca reads comics, and she confirmed that Peter Parker's humor in the spider suit is a signature throughout them.

Dane Deehan as Harry Osbourne was superb casting. Or maybe I'm just biased.

The guy is a crazy good actor and reminds me of a young Leonardo Dicaprio. The only wish I have is that he'd be more of an anti-hero rather than a fully fledged villain. He's such a great actor that I want to root for him.

So now to the bad...

Becca and I disagree on this front, but I really believed the main villain was kinda cheesy. I wish that Spider-Man villains could be more human (like the Dark Night villains, or even Loki characters) but they go for lizards and guys who glow bright blue.

The overall storyline was a bit predictable and anytime Andrew Garfield was playing Peter Parker and not in the Spider-Man suit, he seemed so angsty. Seriously, he was radiating angst.

The ending saved the movie. Shocks and tears, people! Shocks and tears.

He can fly!

However, I'm a bit worried for the franchise. It seems they're gearing up to make a super-villain league with Harry Osbourne at the helm, but again, I never really like the villains. In order to truly rejuvinate Spider-Man, I almost think he needs to have a side-kick or another superhero needs to come into town. I know he's an Avenger, but because of studio rights, he can't really be in an Avenger's movie. But maybe there's something else for him that isn't the same old, same old. Because if they follow the same formula for movie number 3, then it will be a real snooze fest.

Bonus Shout-out: Whoever worked on the score for this movie needs some series accolades. It was awesome.

  1. Mmmmmmm. I haven't watched the movie myself yet...but I'm a lil nervous. The first one was good, but they have WAY too many villains in this one. And I do not like what they did to Electro.

  2. A good sequel to Andrew's first go around at playing Spider-Man. Well acted and fun to watch especially in 3D.

  4. To be honest, I don't liked the Spiderman 2 movie. But I really liked the last one, Homecoming. Of course, there isn't Dane Deehan and it's a great lose. But the rest is great. There's a lot of humor and scenario is interesting. I even purchased a translation of few extra material for the movie.
